Choosing Toe Protectors, Separators and Sleeves

Start with where your toes rub or feel uncomfortable. A protector that covers the tip of a toe serves a different purpose from a spacer between toes or a support beneath them.

Toe Separators and Toe Spacers

Toe separators and toe spacers sit between neighbouring toes to provide separation and help reduce skin-to-skin rubbing. These names are often used interchangeably, although individual designs differ.

Our collection includes foam separators, gel spacers, looped designs and the PediFix Visco-GEL 5-ToeBuddy. Some designs separate two neighbouring toes, while others separate several toes at once.

Choose according to the toes involved, the product’s dimensions and its intended use. Check whether the individual design is suitable for wearing inside shoes.

Gel Toe Caps

Toe caps cover the end of a toe, providing cushioning where the tip rubs against footwear or neighbouring toes.

Check the cap’s diameter and length before ordering. It should cover the sensitive area comfortably without squeezing the toe or making your footwear tight.

Gel Toe Sleeves and Tubing

Toe sleeves cushion a section of the toe while usually leaving the tip uncovered. They are an option to consider when rubbing occurs over or around a toe joint.

Our range includes all-gel tubing and gel-lined sleeves. Some tubes can be cut to the required length; follow the instructions for the individual product.

Foam Toe Protectors

Foam tubing provides a soft protective layer around a toe. Tubifoam is available in different diameters and can be cut into shorter sections.

Choose a diameter that fits comfortably around the toe. A larger size is not automatically better, as excess material can bunch up inside footwear.

Hammer Toe Supports

Toe supports and straighteners differ from protective sleeves. Depending on the design, they support one or more toes rather than simply covering the skin.

Suitability depends on the position and flexibility of your toes. If a toe is stiff, painful or difficult to accommodate in shoes, ask your podiatrist which style is appropriate. Do not force a toe into position.

Bunion Protectors and Felt Pads

Bunion protectors cushion the prominent area at the side of the foot. Felt pads provide targeted protection around areas exposed to pressure or rubbing.

Check the location the product is designed to cover. A protector for the big-toe joint differs from one designed for a tailor’s bunion beside the little toe.

Check Fit Before Wearing

Your footwear needs enough width and depth for both your foot and the protector. Adding cushioning to a tight shoe can increase crowding.

Follow the individual fitting instructions and check your skin during use. Remove the product if you notice increased pain, irritation, numbness or changes in skin colour.

FAQs

Got a question? We are here to answer

What is the difference between toe separators and toe spacers?
The terms are often used interchangeably for products that sit between toes. Designs vary: some separate two neighbouring toes, while others separate several toes. Compare the shape, size and intended use rather than choosing by name alone.
Do toe spacers work?
Toe spacers may help reduce rubbing between neighbouring toes and improve comfort while worn. Results depend on the cause of your symptoms, the design and its fit. They should not be relied on to permanently straighten toes or reverse a bunion.
How do I use toe separators?
Position the separator between the toes specified in the product instructions. Any loop should sit comfortably without constricting the toe. Check that your toes are not being forced apart and that your shoes have enough room.
How long should I wear toe spacers?
There is no single wearing time suitable for every design. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and any advice from your podiatrist. When first trying a suitable product, check comfort and skin regularly rather than immediately wearing it for a full day
Can I wear toe separators inside shoes?
Most designs are intended for use inside footwear; however some designs need more space or are designed for use while resting. Check the individual listing. Shoes should have enough width and depth to accommodate the separator without squeezing your toes.
Should I choose a toe cap or a toe sleeve?
A toe cap covers the tip of the toe. A sleeve cushions a section of the toe and usually leaves the tip open. Choose according to where the rubbing occurs, then check the product’s diameter, length and coverage.
Can I cut toe tubing to fit?
Many foam and gel tubes can be cut to the required length, but not every toe protector is designed for trimming. Follow the instructions for your particular product and check its diameter as well as its length.
Can toe spacers help with bunion discomfort?
An appropriately fitted spacer may help reduce pressure or rubbing between the big toe and its neighbour. A bunion protector cushions the side of the joint instead. Both are designed to help increase comfort and protect from friction and rubbing.
Can a hammer toe support straighten my toe?
Some supports help position a flexible toe while worn and help by reducing pressure on the tip of the toe, but they do not guarantee permanent correction. A stiff or fixed hammer toe needs individual assessment. Do not force a painful toe into a support.
Are toe protectors washable and reusable?
Many gel and foam products are washable and reusable, but care instructions vary. Follow the individual product’s cleaning directions and allow it to dry as instructed. Replace it if it becomes damaged or no longer fits securely.
Can I use toe protectors if I have diabetes or poor circulation?
Ask your podiatrist or treating clinician before use if you have diabetes, poor circulation, reduced sensation or fragile skin. Correct fit and regular skin checks are particularly important. Seek advice for broken skin, persistent redness or unexplained toe pain.
